Many people make New Year's resolutions but have you ever thought of making a crafty one?
At a recent branch meeting of The Knitting and Crochet Guild we decided for the January meeting we would ask people to make a pledge to try a new skill, finish a project that has long been abandoned or try and get their stash under control (yes we secretly meant feeding it more wool). It's not compulsory by any means it's just meant as a bit of fun and we will be awarding badges for the people that go through with it.
Well I can't do a long abandoned project I don't have any of them apart from the fair isle cardigan we steeked earlier in the year that needs its sleeves knitting but I'm really not in the mood for it and it may well end up been a waistcoat yet so I don't have to knit them. My stash is the shop so I can't really get that under control and the little bit in the bottom of my wardrobe all has plans and I even started one of them this week and I'm already regretting the top down red riding hood cape for the daughter and I've only done 5 rounds.
So a new skill it has to be, for those of you that know me I absolutely hate small thin needles and thin yarn so I tend to avoid socks like the plague in fact I've only ever made two pairs and one of those was crocheted. My knitting friends tend to take pity on me and knit me the odd pair for my birthday. Problem been a lot of you my customers are sock knitters and you come in and expect me to know what you are talking about or worse be able to fix a problem you may have.
You can see what's coming can't you, yes that's right 2019 is going to be the year of the sock for me. Gulp I will get to grips with them and hopefully learn to enjoy them, what's more I'm pledging to not just make one pair but a pair a month. Yes that's right 12 pairs in total over the year, I thought that way I would get a good knowledge of sock knitting. I can tell you there's going to be some cursing going on.
I've got my stuff already sorted the wool, needles and pattern book are sat there waiting for me to start on New Year's Day. I'm going to start with DPN's then maybe give circulars a try as well, which needle do you prefer?
Of course I will keep you updated on social media so wish me luck. Do you fancy joining us and taking a pledge as well? You don't have to be a member of The Knitting and Crochet Guild but you are more than welcome to join us at our next meeting on Tuesday 8th January 7 - 9 pm at the shop.
